Current OSR-CS News
The OSR Web site has been updated and moved to a newer and faster platform. Although additional updates are forthcoming, it is hoped that any further disruptions of service will be minimal.
Associate Director Ken Wahl retired from OSR-CS on Friday, October 30. Ken's many accomplishments and achievements in thirty years of service to UC Berkeley will be greatly missed.
Principal Analyst David Radwin left OSR-CS on Friday, October 16 for
MPR Associates in Berkeley, CA. His article, "
High Response Rates Don't Ensure Survey Accuracy," appeared in the October 9, 2009 edition of
The Chronicle of Higher Education.
OSR-CS data and services overview
The Office of Student Research and Campus Surveys (OSR-CS) is currently undergoing a major revamping of its institutional data, survey operations and consultation services. We apologize for the inconvenience while this transition is taking place. Below are more details.
Please contact
Executive Director Gregg Thomson
regarding access to services and information.
Surveys
OSR-CS is replacing its existing survey system with a third party
solution. Our goal is to select up to three survey products by the end of September 2009 for purchase or contract on a trial basis. We expect to have
made a final decision and have fully functioning survey services for the
campus no later than January 2010.
Institutional data
OSR-CS's institutional data, consisting of admissions, enrollment, and graduation data from campus records from 1983 to the present, will be
migrated eventually to the campus Enterprise Data Warehouse. Initial access to these data will be limited to OSR-CS staff. Once the data is migrated, access will be extended to a select number of campus users and will require connections with secure protocols. We will keep the campus community apprised of the data's availability, once a more definitive date is known.
Website
OSR-CS's website is being restored over the course of the fall
2009 semester. It will continue to feature commonly requested
admission, enrollment, graduation, and survey data, but the data will
be in the form of static (predefined) tables only. The website will no
longer support interactive queries using institutional data (customized
tables). Specialized requests for student data will need to be directed to
OSR-CS staff (but see below).
Requests for information and services
Like many campus units, OSR-CS is experiencing extreme budgetary
difficulties, including reduced central funding, departure of
personnel whose functions are not able to be replaced, and increased costs to maintain
existing functions. As a result, OSR-CS's ability to respond to campus
and outside requests for information, analysis, and other services
will be severely limited for the foreseeable future. In breaking with
historical practice, there will be a nominal charge for many requests
previously handled at no charge, other requests will be charged at higher
rate to fully cover actual costs, and some requests simply will not be
possible to handle at all.
